A sequel to the film is already in the works.

It is the clash of legends that occurs in "Godzilla vs. Kong" when two mythical rivals engage in a magnificent conflict that has the potential to change the course of history. During their treacherous trip to uncover Kong's actual home, he and his guards are accompanied by Jia, a little orphaned girl with whom he has established an unusual and deep attachment. A raging Godzilla, however, suddenly places them in the way of the heroes, causing widespread devastation around the planet. There is a secret that lurks deep beneath the center of the Earth, and it begins with the epic battle between two titans, which was sparked by invisible powers and is just the beginning of the story.

In 2024, Godzilla and Kong are the only active Titans on Earth, five years after Godzilla slew his alien foe Ghidorah. A storm created by Ghidorah combined with the storm cell that surrounds Skull Island has caused its climate to become unstable, leading Monarch to confine Kong within a dome-shaped facility with an orphaned young Iwi girl called Jia who is deaf and can communicate with Kong through sign language.

When Jia visits Kong and presents him a doll, a tree is hurled at him.

Meanwhile, Bernie Hayes, an employee of the Apex Cybernetics corporation and host of a Titan conspiracy theory podcast known as the Titan Truth Podcast, exfiltrates information suggesting sinister activities at a Pensacola Apex facility, but as he finished downloading the files, Godzilla arrives and unexpectedly attacks. During Godzilla's rampage, Bernie discovers a strange piece of technology resembling a giant robotic eye among the ruins of the facility.

Following the assault, popular opinion has shifted against Godzilla, who is no longer seen as humanity's savior. Madison Russell, now an adult and a follower of Bernie's podcast, is concerned when she hears about Godzilla's latest assault at her school. After school, she attempts in vain to persuade her widowed father Mark (who is serving as Monarch's director) that she has a probable clue on the source of Godzilla's rampage, but he ignores everything she says, stating merely that beasts, like humans, may evolve. Later, Madison enlists the aid of her closest friend Josh Valentine to track down the person responsible for Godzilla's rampage and uncover Apex's secrets.

Nathan Lind is a former scientist at Monarch who now thinks that the Titans live in the Hollow Earth, an underground world that is below the Earth and where they hide. Lind will help Apex's CEO, Walter Simmons, find a powerful energy source in the Hollow Earth. Nathan is afraid at first because his brother tried to go into the Hollow Earth, but a strong anti-gravity field inside the tunnel killed him. After Walter tells him that Apex has made and built Hollow Earth Aerial Vehicles, which can withstand the gravity field's pressure, he finally agrees.

To help guide them to the Hollow Earth, Nathan travels to Skull Island and meets his colleague, Monarch anthropological linguist and Jia's adoptive mother Ilene Andrews, with his idea of using Kong as their navigator to lead them to the energy source since Skull Island is no longer able to contain him (because Kong has grown too large) and allow him to survive. Though Ilene declines at first as she explains that Godzilla would come for Kong as soon as he was moved off of Skull Island, she finally accepts after being convinced by Nathan that they need to undertake this mission in order to stop Godzilla's rampage and that they can also find Kong a new home.

However, Godzilla is confused by depth charges, allowing Kong to surface for air.

Seeing no other option, Nathan decides that the group should instead shut down all the ships' power to trick Godzilla into thinking he destroyed them and Kong was defeated which eventually succeeds. Godzilla observes the destroyed fleet curiously and, believing that he had won, swims away. Realizing that Godzilla could return if they reactivate the ships, the group change plans and instead fly Kong to a Hollow Earth entry point in Antarctica, the place where Ghidorah was originally frozen. There, Jia explains to Kong that his home is through the entrance, but he is too reluctant to go.

Meanwhile, Madison and Josh locate Bernie, who recognizes Madison as Mark's daughter and joins their inquiry, believing Apex was involved in Godzilla's behavior shift. They slip inside the devastated Apex facility together, only to discover that Bernie's previous description of the "eye" has vanished. As they find a hidden facility deep down, the gang is accidentally imprisoned in and carried via an underground conduit to Hong Kong in an antigravity transport vehicle carrying Skullcrawler eggs.

En there, they encounter Apex's ultimate weapon "Mechagodzilla" - a mechanical Godzilla commanded by the late Dr. Ishiro Serizawa's son, Ren Serizawa. Once the mecha is powered up, Walter unleashes a gigantic adult Skullcrawler nicknamed "Number 10" into the room to test Mechagodzilla's Titan-fighting abilities. As the Skullcrawler nears Madison, Josh, and Bernie, Mechagodzilla grabs it and restrains it, before cleaving it in two with a tremendous red energy beam. As a result of the power supply's restrictions, the mecha promptly shuts down.

The plan of Walter to defeat Mechagodzilla by using the energy of the Hollow Earth is then revealed. After seeing that Mechagodzilla is the actual culprit, Madison understands that Apex is using Godzilla as a pawn to replace him and all of the Titans so that humans may take their rightful position as the planet's dominant race. While searching for a way out, Madison and the others stumble upon a room where Ren is controlling Mechagodzilla via radio waves using the severed head of Ghidorah, which has been turned into a biological supercomputer and cockpit by Apex after Alan Jonah acquired it because it had previously been bitten off by Godzilla during his battle with Ghidorah five years earlier.

Kong and Nathan's team start their journey at a stunning stone temple that belonged to Kong's forebears. They find artifacts of an ancient fight between Kong and Godzilla's race on their way inside, and Kong finds an antique axe carved from a deceased Godzilla's race member's dorsal plate. Kong's axe may also be replenished by this power source. Despite Ilene's concerns that Apex cannot simply take the find of the century, Maia and the Apex team capture the power source and return it to their Hong Kong headquarters using spider-like drones. Maia's guards open fire on Nathan's team, but Kong responds with a passionate scream. When Godzilla senses the activation of Mechagodzilla, he races to Hong Kong.

Godzilla makes his way into the heart of the city and, upon detecting Kong's presence in the Hollow Earth, uses his atomic breath to dig a hole through the environment, causing the temple to collapse. When a flock of Hellhawks attacks, Kong and Nathan's team rush to the rescue, only for Kong to grab their HEAV on their way out, crushing it in his hand despite Maia's attempts to shoot him in order to escape. After peeking inside to make sure Jia, Ilene, and Nathan aren't in there, Kong immediately crushes the aircraft in his hand, killing Maia and her team on board.

When Godzilla issues his challenge, Kong accepts it and starts traveling to Hong Kong with his axe, with Ilene, Nathan, and Jia trailing behind in their HEAV, a hole created by Godzilla's atomic breath. After a rematch with Godzilla in Hong Kong, Kong is able to get the upper hand and jam his axe down Godzilla's throat, thereby preventing him from unleashing his atomic breath once again. Kong uses his axe to stab Godzilla in the leg, but Godzilla pulls the axe from of Kong's grasp and throws it away. Following his recovery, Kong attacks Godzilla with his axe, generating an explosion that forces the two Titans back, giving Nathan the idea that Kong had won the second round of the fight against Godzilla, which is incorrect.

He shows compassion and saves Kong's life before walking away, leaving Kong with serious injuries but still awake as he succumbs to commotio cordis as a result of his injuries.

When Walter returns to the Apex headquarters, he is overjoyed and orders Ren to dispatch Mechagodzilla to fight Godzilla. Though Ren cautions him against utilizing the new Hollow Earth energy source without first testing it, he dismisses Ren's warning and tells him to activate the mecha without hesitation. Bernie, Madison, and Josh are apprehended by security for invading Apex headquarters and are transferred to Walter's place of confinement. Despite the fact that Madison blames Walter of inciting Godzilla to war and caused everything to come to this, Walter boldly says that he took responsibility for providing humanity a chance to fight back against Godzilla and the Titans in the first place.

While Josh and Bernie fail to remotely disable the rampaging robot, and Madison calls for aid from Mark, Godzilla and Mechagodzilla fight, each firing their energy beams at each other, locking together, only for Mechagodzilla to win, knocking Godzilla down and burning him. The trio approach an unconscious Kong, where Jia notices his pulse decreasing. They can't produce a big enough charge to restart Kong's heart, but Nathan remembers Maia's earlier comment about the HEAVs producing enough power to power Las Vegas for a week, so he flies the remaining HEAV onto Kong's chest and sets it to self-destruct, detonating the craft and releasing a huge electrical charge that instantly revives Kong.

To save Godzilla, Kong climbs atop Mechagodzilla and diverts its red energy beam into the air, thereby preventing Godzilla from being killed. Godzilla aids Kong in the battle against Mechagodzilla after realizing that Kong saved his life and realising that he is not an adversary.

The two Titans work together to change the tide, but the robot proves to be stronger than their combined force and overpowers them. Kong reclaims his axe, which he had lost during his previous encounter with Godzilla, and strikes numerous blows on Mechagodzilla, but his weapon, having lost its charge, is worthless against the robot, which tries to mortally impale Kong with its tail drill. All seems to be lost for Kong and Godzilla until Bernie, understanding there is nothing he and the others can do, takes out a flask of booze and suggests they all have a drink. However, Josh pulls the flask from Bernie's grasp and short-circuits Mechagodzilla's controls by dumping the contents of the drink all over the control panel, causing Mechagodzilla to halt and allowing Godzilla and Kong to regroup and retake the upper hand.

After seeing Kong holding his axe, Godzilla charges it by blasting it with his atomic breath. This allows Kong to dismantle Mechagodzilla from head to toe and then sit down to relax after raising his trophy and letting out a great shout of victory.

Monarch subsequently established an observation station in the Hollow Earth. Ilene, Nathan, and Jia observe Kong on his morning stroll one day. Kong jumps atop a cliff, pounds his chest, and roars, proclaiming himself king of the Hollow Earth and joyfully accepting it as his new home and dominion.

Monster Films

Godzilla vs. Kong has received favorable reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has 341 reviews, 254 of them fresh, and a "Tomatometer" score of 74 percent fresh as of April 16, 2021. The site's reviewers' consensus feature argues that "Delivering squarely on its title, Godzilla vs. Kong swats away character development and human drama to deliver all the spectacle you'd expect from giant monsters slugging it out."

Similar thoughts were reflected in the site's summary of audience evaluations, which said, "This long-awaited blockbuster matchup makes it easy not to think about the so-so story and characters by serving up plenty of action and incredible effects." Reviewers largely enjoyed the film's monster brawling aspect, but some were disappointed by the "half-baked" human element that was included in the film. The film was credited for bringing an end to a box office slump fueled by the COVID-19 epidemic, having earned an estimated $48.5 million dollars at the United States box office by the morning of Sunday, the last day of the film's five-day weekend run. It was not immediately clear how well the picture fared on HBO Max, but WarnerMedia indicated that it was a film that people were viewing more than once and that it had a greater viewer audience than any other series or feature that has been released on the service since its introduction. The picture also experienced strong overseas box office performance, with an extra gross of around $236 million in regions outside than the United States.

Godzilla vs. Kong topped the overall box office of Godzilla: King of the Monsters on April 17, 2021, although still having a relatively low box office owing to the outbreak.

Kyle Chandler has appeared in two King Kong films, the first being Peter Jackson's 2005 version.

An allusion to Martin Rigg's famed ability to do the same thing in the Lethal Weapon series may be made in the moment when Kong slams his dislocated right shoulder on the building to realign it.

Several allusions to the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion may be seen in the film:
